The context

At a distributor, the visible part is the shop; the expensive part is the back office. Catalogue, stock, orders, suppliers, work carried out at customer sites: anything without a proper tool ends up in a spreadsheet circulating by email, with the copying errors that implies. The application was several years old, it worked, and its interface had aged — the classic case where a complete rewrite is tempting and would be a mistake.

What we did

  • check_circleTaking over and maintaining the existing system in production before any modernisation. Stabilise, then improve.
  • check_circleProgressive interface migration, screen by screen, with the old and new versions coexisting.
  • check_circleThe business back office: catalogue, stock, orders, field work tracking, accounting exports.
  • check_circleIntegrations with the tools already in place, to eliminate manual copying between systems.
  • check_circleHosting, deployments and backups, with a single channel to report a problem.

What changed

  • trending_upBusiness was never interrupted by the modernisation: every batch delivered is immediately usable.
  • trending_upData is no longer copied by hand from one tool to another, so it no longer diverges.
  • trending_upThe most-used screens were rebuilt first, not the easiest ones.
  • trending_upOne point of contact for the shop, the back office and the servers.
